Twenty three Zimbabwean women have been arrested while trying to smuggle cosmetics with hazardous substances from Zambia.
According to the Court’s Crime Record Book 23 women appeared at the Victoria Falls Magistrates Courts between July and August this year.
The criminal records show that the women mainly smuggled cosmetics like Extra Clair, Epidem Cream and Movate Cream, which are known to contain hazardous substances, which have long-term effects on the user.
Some users end up developing skin cancer.
Those found smuggling such products are being charged with contravening Section 17 (1) (a) as read with Section 33 (b) of the Hazardous Substances Act, Chapter 15.05 as read with Section 6 of Statutory Instrument 247 of 2000.
On Friday, eight women were brought to court facing charges of smuggling the hazardous substances.
The courts can only fine them amounts ranging between US$10 and US$20, which most offenders quickly pay.
They then return to source them because they are in demand.
