In 1953 a well-known therapist defined it as “an explosive discharge of neuromuscular tension”. There are other definitions, but the word ‘tension’ comes up in most. Which suggests that when you have sex you deliberately wind yourself up just so that you can experience the pleasure of returning to normal afterwards. Bizarre!
What happens in the body?
The technical stuff that creates all this tension is pretty amazing.
* Your heart pumps faster and your breathing gets heavier to fuel those tensing muscles.
* Hormones such as endorphins and oxytocin are pumped round your brain and body, telling you this is fun.
* Blood is pumped to your genitals to create the tension that will ultimately trigger a pudendal reflex (muscular spasm of the genitals).
* That reflex will result in your pelvic-floor muscles contracting between five and 15 times at 0.8-second intervals. This is an orgasm as we know it.
* A wandering neural pathway that bypasses the spine has recently been discovered, explaining why some paraplegics say they can experience orgasms.
What an orgasm isn’t
An orgasm should never be the objective of sex. You can have a great time with a partner, feeling aroused, sensual, intimate and loving, and not have an orgasm. Yes, it’s fun – but unless you’re trying to get pregnant it shouldn’t be your primary goal.
You can’t make someone have an orgasm. What you can do, besides physically stimulating your partner, is create a safe, comfortable and caring environment for them in which an orgasm might happen.
Orgasm is not limited to the genitals; some people can experience orgasm without their genitals being touched. Some people describe the sensation as a “tingle”; for others the feelings go all over the body.
Faking it
Why do some people – male and female – fake orgasms? Maybe because we tend to see orgasm as the signal to stop sex. If, for some reason, your mind or body doesn’t fancy an orgasm you could be at it forever.
Most people who fake it do so to please their partner. They feel they’re letting them down if they don’t make it. Instead of pretending, try and create a relationship where, if you’re not in the mood or you’ve lost the momentum, you can say so honestly.
Quality not quantity
We tend to make a huge fuss about orgasms in our society. Most articles about enhancing your sex life focus on improving orgasms or having more of them. But the intensity of an orgasm is not an indication of sexual satisfaction. If you want a good orgasm, you can do it yourself. If you want a satisfying sexual relationship, you’ll need a lot more.
In psychosexual therapy, people are told about the 2-6-2 rule. Out of every ten times you have sex, the chances are that twice it’ll be fantastic and mind-blowing, and the earth will move; six times it’ll be nice but nothing special; and twice you’ll wish you hadn’t bothered.

The greater the drop in cholesterol from taking statin drugs, the more sexual pleasure is reduced, suggests a study due Friday at the American Psychosomatic Society meeting in Chicago.
This may be the first research to pit statins against placebos to see how the blockbuster statins affect the ability to have orgasms. Statins generated about $13.1 billion in sales last year, according to IMS Health.
Statins are valuable drugs that save lives, says Lori Mosca, director of preventive cardiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, who was not involved in the study. “But most doctors who prescribe them don’t even ask about sexual function,” she says, “and patients don’t tend to spontaneously talk about it.”
The findings should spur doctors to ask patients routinely about changes in sexual pleasure, says Mosca, because those with problems may want to try another statin or drop the medications.
The six-month, government-funded study involved more than 1,000 adults with high LDL — the bad cholesterol — but no heart disease. Participants were randomly selected to take either statins or a placebo. In the study, sexual pleasure sank along with LDL levels, says study leader Beatrice Golomb of the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine.
Patients who took simvastatin, or Zocor, had the biggest LDL drop, but men rated their sexual pleasure as sinking by nearly half over the study period. Women were somewhat better off, “but some definitely were affected,” Golomb says. Pravastatin, or Pravachol, the other statin tested, reduced LDL less and didn’t have a significant effect on orgasms.
Some studies have found that statins improve sexual function, probably because the pills can improve blood flow to the genital area, Golomb says. But she says the drugs also may reduce Coenzyme Q10, a nutrient that helps cells convert oxygen, blood and glucose into energy. “Orgasm is a high-energy activity,” so losing the nutrient could weaken sexual pleasure, she says.
Statins might influence orgasms by affecting brain chemistry, sensory nerves or the spinal cord, says neuroscientist Barry Komisaruk of Rutgers and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. “We need a lot more research to find out what’s going on here,” he says.
Everything in medicine has risks and benefits, says Tim Gardner, president of the American Heart Association. He’s treated many with statins and seldom heard of bad sexual side effects.
Diet, weight loss and exercise should be tried before taking statins, he says. “We’re not suggesting putting statins in the water for everybody willy-nilly. … Some could choose not to take them if they have bad side effects.”

President Obama’s new budget would eliminate most money for abstinence-only sex education and shift it to teen pregnancy prevention — a U-turn in what has been more than a decade of sex education policy in the USA.
The proposed budget, sent to Congress last Thursday, “reflects the research,” says Melody Barnes, director of the team that coordinates White House domestic policy.
“In any area where Americans want to confront a problem, they want solutions they know will work, as opposed to programming they know hasn’t proven to be successful. Given where we’ve been in recent years, I think this is a very important moment,” she says.
Abstinence-only sex education programs, which emphasize a no-sex-until-marriage message, received almost $1.3 billion in federal dollars from fiscal years 2001-2009, according to the Office of Management and Budget. At the same time, studies of abstinence-only programs have shown little success; the most often-cited study, released in 2007, was congressionally mandated and federally funded and found that abstinence-only programs don’t prevent or delay teen sex.
Valerie Huber of the National Abstinence Education Association says that 2007 study was “an early study about early programs. Things have changed.”
Two weeks ago, she says her organization briefed congressional aides about an analysis of studies that she says refutes arguments that abstinence education doesn’t affect sexual behavior.
Barnes says the budget leaves open a possibility that an abstinence-only program could be funded, if there is evidence of its effectiveness.
Obama’s budget proposes almost $178 million for teen pregnancy prevention, including $110 million for community-based programs. About 75% of that is for programs proven to have delayed sex and increased contraceptive use or reduced teen pregnancy. The other 25% could be for “innovative” programs.
Obama “is open to innovation, and that could include abstinence-only if there is some indication it would work,” Barnes says.
Huber says her organization must work harder to convince Congress to continue funding abstinence education.
“We’re encouraging abstinence programs around the country to let Congress know what research they have and share what an abstinence program truly is,” Huber says.

Grigori Aleksandrovich Galitsin (Russian: Григорий Александрович Галицын, Sci: Grigorij Aleksandrovič Galicyn; also known as A. Obolenski) (1957 in Razdelnaya, Ukraine, then USSR) is a Russian erotic photographer and porn director.
Biography
Grigori Galitsin studied classical painting in Leningrad, but later turned to photography. His first camera, an early Leica model, was given to him by his grandfather who purchased it from the German army in 1947. In 1997, he was recipient of a Master Kodak Exhibition award.
In 1996, Grigori Galitsin, who by then had established himself primarily as an erotic photographer based in Volgograd, began providing content to an early Internet adult website. In 1998, he became the main content provider for the newly-founded adult website, Most Erotic Teens (the predecessor of MET-ART), and also provided content for another adult site, DOMAI. In 2002, he left MET and launched the website Galitsin-Archives as a joint project with Norwegian photographer Petter Hegre. Due to a conflict with Peter Hegre in 2004, Grigori Galitsin ended Galitsin-Archives and established his own website Galitsin-News. Grigori Galitsin also started the sister website Nud-Art in 2006.
The majority of Grigori Galitsin’s photos and videos were shot in the Volgograd area, and sometimes in hotels in Moscow as well. Grigori Galitsin’s apartment (the former home of poet Margarita Agashina and former Volgograd mayor Yuri Chekov) doubled as a high-tech porn studio. His activity as a pornographer was largely unknown to his neighbors, though he was noted around Volgograd for his expensive lifestyle.
Occasionally he would travel abroad with his models to countries like Egypt and India to shoot on location there. In 2006, Grigori Galitsin filmed and photographed several models at some beach resorts and Ayurvedic massage parlours in Varkala and Papanasam, India. Indian police later became aware of the resulting videos, which had been posted on Galitsin-News, and conducted raids on a number of Varkala massage parlours on suspicion of illegal activity.
On September 17, 2006, Grigori Galitsin and his wife Irina Aleksandrovna Pischasova (who was also one of his models, appearing under the name “Valentina“) were arrested in Volgograd, accused of violating Russian Criminal Code Article 133 (”Coercion [through blackmail] to commit a sexual act“) and Article 242.1 (”Manufacturing and dissemination of materials or objects containing pornographic images of minors”). On October 26, he petitioned the Russian president Vladimir Putin and asked for intervention on his behalf. According to a second letter to Putin drafted in May 2007, Grigori Galitsin was still in custody awaiting trial. Pischasova was also once again taken into custody in March. Grigori Galitsin and his wife were released from prison in early 2009, though Grigori Galitsin faces further charges which, if convicted, may result in up to 8 years of further imprisonment.
Photography and videos
Grigori Galitsin specialized in barely legal or lolita pornography. He also produced erotic videos for his websites and eventually DVDs as well. The majority of his models were young Russian women in their late teens to early twenties. Many of his models are well-known Russian glamour models, but he also had a number of models who worked exclusively for him, often for years at a time.
His work usually consists of softcore nude photography, though some sets and videos cross over into hardcore pornography, typically depicting masturbation, lesbian activity, or urination.
